ABOUT JUST BENEATH THE SURFACE

When Kendall Berkely takes a look in the mirror, she not only desperately wants to run away from the stranger staring back at her; but she also knows that her days are numbered. She can feel it in her bones, and has the bruises to prove it. To make matters worse, Kendall will soon discover that her seventeen year old daughter, Diamond is on a path nearly just as dangerous.
After the demise of the family unit she once knew, a distracted mother, and being forced to accept a new stepfather, Diamond finds herself knee deep in a multitude of mistakes. When Diamond finds herself more lonely than ever before she crosses paths with Bobby Lidell; a teacher’s aide with a dark side. Just as Diamond realizes that she is in over her head, her mother and father have already been notified, and will do everything in their power to protect her.
But what is lurking in the shadows will not stop until a vow has been kept; what is lurking just beneath the surface will come seeking revenge.

Thursday Thirteen – Thirteen Things About the Characters in Just Beneath the Surface

1) My first main character, Kendall, is a very confident woman. Not only did she model in her younger years, but she has no problem saying exactly what is on her mind.

2) Kendall is a loving mother of two: Diamond and Julian

3) Throughout the book, Kendall changes. She loses herself, and finds that fear has consumed her life. She is not the warm, nurturing mother she once was. Her new husband chips away at her little by little.

4) Kendall never thought she would see the day where she did not know what to say. She thought she knew what domestic violence looked like, and never thought that she would be the type of woman who would lie about, or cover up bruises.

5) In her new marriage, Kendall experiences a very abusive side of her new husband. She becomes nervous, unsure, and constantly second guesses herself. She is anxious about what she says, does, and even what she thinks.

6) My second main character, Diamond, is the daughter of Kendall. She is an insecure teenager who is stumbling along, and making very unhealthy choices; some of them involving older men.

7) Diamond will find herself in a very dangerous situation where she is not only afraid, but she must also deal with some humiliating gossip at school. All of her friends turn away from her.

8) Diamond is facing loneliness like never before. She only wants the relationship she once had with her mother back. But with her new marriage, Kendall hardly notices or has time to truly see how much her daughter misses her.

9) The character, Michael, is the man Kendall has has been with for fourteen years. He is very spoiled, selfish and immature. His parents are allowing him to behave like a child, and somehow, he sees nothing wrong with his behavior.

10) Kendall is not perfect. She is passive aggressive, stubborn, and has given up on talking to or ‘fixing’ Michael. Neither of them nurtured their relationship, and both of them are pointing fingers.

11) Kendall’s new husband is a very shy, quiet man. At times, he is a pushover.

12) Kendall gets to know her husband better, and she realizes that his dark side is much darker than she ever imagined.

13) Death will come to one of the characters.
